Donna has been a professional makeup artist for over four years and has been a tutor at SRA since 2014. She teaches the Performance and Special Effects component of our full-time courses and has a passion for creating looks for theatre performances. Find out what drives Donna below:
How did you become a tutor at SRA?
A former head tutor, who knew me from when I was a student makeup artist and was aware of my skills, asked me to join the team. I was a part-time educator at first, but have since become a full-time educator.
What excites you most about your work?
I absolutely love doing theatre. Theatre people are so amazingly talented, hilarious, down to earth and completely out of their minds! I love working with them and feeding off their energy. I really love completing their look for them as makeup is usually that last detail that brings their performance together.
What kind of work have you done in the past?
I have worked with a lot of theatre companies such as Auckland Music Theatre,Tadpole Productions and The Dolphin Theatre, as well as with schools including St Kentigern where I mentor the student makeup team and give support throughout their school productions. I worked on Mamma Mia at The Civic and have worked on a number of film productions, music videos and fashion shows.
What is your signature makeup look?
I am known for my performance work for theatre and film productions. My signature work would be creating characters – I like to come up with new creations.
What is your top makeup tip?
Try absolutely anything! If it’s right it will be amazing, if it doesn’t work, its only makeup… it comes off and you can try something else! Sometimes the mistakes are what turns out to be truly beautiful.
What’s the one problem you are best at solving for your students?
Refocusing students back on their goals after they may have strayed from them at some point and really helping them to achieve their certificates.
What are you passionate about personally?
Personally I am passionate about my work! I really do love what I do and can’t stop talking about the amazing people I work with or a TV show or movie with outstanding special effects.
Where can we find you when you’re not working?
If I haven’t made the trek up North to Ngunguru for the weekend to see my parents and family, you will find me with a glass of wine and my cat watching an entire TV series or catching up with the friends I neglect cause I’m so busy.
