an occasional guest tutor at SRA

Leslie is a very experienced SRA tutor having worked in the makeup industry for 15 years. Leslie is nowadsy one of our occasional guest tutors. Discover more below.

How did you come to be a tutor at SRA? What path brought you here?

I arrived in NZ in 2008 and I really liked the people here as well as the country so my family decided to stay here and luckily I got a teaching job at SRA as my first job in NZ. I started teaching at SRA in February 2009 and got promoted to train the Trainers and was in charge of the Recruitment and Administration department until December 2012. I left SRA for 2 years to explore other work and now I am back teaching the part time class which I really LOVE!!!

What are you known for professionally? What is your signature look?

Professionally, I love the Beauty and Fashion Industry. I love fashion photo shoots and training people in make-up. My signature look would be Fashion Smokey and Natural Fashion as I love beautiful makeup and these looks are the most requested ones from the hundreds of clients I've worked with :)

What’s the one problem you are best at solving for your students?

Most of our students start the course with little knowledge in makeup or sometimes completely wrong skills and bad habits that they've grown used to doing - hence they lack confidence in applying makeup on other people. As their mentor and tutor, I always do my best to equip them with the skills they need to be confident and to be an amazing Makeup Artist in the Industry.

Who have you worked with in the past? And what have you done for them?

I have done makeup for TV, print, theatre and advertising. I also did a lot of training in private training establishments such as the Center for Aesthetic Studies Philippines, Servilles Academy NZ, Academy NZ and Samala Robinson Academy NZ. I was also the top student when I studied professional make-up artistry and that paved the way to my teaching career. And of course, I've worked in Retail, Training, Sales and Marketing for brands such as Paul & Joe, Camouflage Australia, Makeup Forever, MAC and of course our very own Samala Cosmetics.

What are you most passionate about professionally? What most excites you about your work & the contribution you can make?

Professionally, I am very passionate about teaching and bringing out the best in people. It makes me proud, excited and fulfilled when I see my students succeed in the makeup and beauty industry. I am also very blessed to have a career in this industry (makeup and beauty) as I can help my fellow women (and women at heart) feel great about themselves which is very empowering.

What are you passionate about personally? What do you really enjoy? What can’t you stop talking about?

Personally, I LOVE fashion.... clothes, shoes, bags, accessories, and of course makeup...I LOVE shopping!!! I like taking care of myself but not over the top ;) I love eating and trying out new restaurants with my husband. I love the outdoors and I LOVE dogs. I can't stop talking about everything that I'm passionate about and that’s all of it :)

Where can we find you when you're not working? What's your favourite way to spend a weekend or a Sunday afternoon?

When I'm not working (or doing household chores), I do a lot of cooking as my boys (husband & son) love the food I cook. My weekend is basically family, ME time and catching-up with friends. Every Sunday the whole family has dinner at our fave restaurant with a lovely dessert to finish the day.

How long have you been doing what you do?

I've been doing makeup for 15 years now.... Time really flies :)

What is your top makeup tip?

A beautiful skin and well-blended base will make things work for you! No matter how much colour you apply on your face, if you don't take care of your skin and do not pay attention to your base (primer, foundation, powder) your make-up will not look good.

In short, LOVE your skin! Leslie xx
